Welcome
to the first Animated Remedy newsletter of 2008! We are as busy as ever,
our office full of exciting projects that we’ll be sharing with
you over the course of the year. Please feel free to forward this newsletter
on to colleagues and let us know their email address if they’d
like to be sent future issues direct.
Visualising
the future
In this
edition we look at what computer generated imagery (cgi) can do for
the property development industry, be it still or animated format.
Client
buy-in
In the first instance an architect sits down with pen & paper, turns
the music up and arrives at a sketch design. Occasionally at this stage
we are asked to translate these sketches into more discernable visuals
for presentation to the client. This is where cgi becomes a design tool,
and is especially helpful with regard to larger projects such as multi-storey
towers and big-budget projects. The form of the building, the materials,
the way it appears and reacts to different lighting situations can all
be convincingly and accurately portrayed through use of cgi’s.
With budgets this big the design has to be correct and the correct aesthetic
achieved, thus being able to change the images becomes crucial. Refer
to our portfolio and last November’s newsletter for examples of
images produced from mainly sketch information.
Planning
perfection
However, for those of you that are a bit light on the multi-storey tower
projects, you may wish to utilise cgi for your planning images. You’ve
heard it said before that a picture is worth a thousand words, and in
planning terms that’s worth a lot. Delays in achieving planning
cost time and money and can place a project at risk. Our experience
is that many planning officers find reading drawings difficult, particularly
in relation to complex schemes. CGI’s are an important resource
for offering clarity, and providing an idea of not only the massing
of buildings but also the spaces between them. Appropriate for use on
any scale of project cgi’s are particularly crucial for projects
known to be contentious. We are delighted to say that our images have
been used in numerous instances where achieving planning was a problem,
with great success. Working from Cad plans and elevations, the models
produced are as accurate as the drawings supplied to us. So go on, give
us a good design and we’ll make it look great!
Roll
with the changes..
So that’s planning dealt with. You’ve used cgi’s to
achieve planning approval, the project is on schedule, on budget and
you’ve got a happy client. Next comes the phone-call about cost
savings, the QS having now accurately costed the development. Design
changes follow, which can all be incorporated into the cgi model with
relative ease. The updated images can then be sent to the planning authority
to illustrate the proposed changes.
Did you
see how we turned a negative into a positive? It’s worth noting
that this isn’t quite so easily performed with watercolour imagery.
Marketing
suite
Work has started on site and the development is making good progress.
Now is the time that marketing is of principal concern. This is where
cgi’s pay for themselves. If a development has already been modelled
for use at the planning stage, the model can simply be updated with
any revisions and life-styled to provide an accurate representation
of the development. The images can then be put to use in various formats;
brochures, flyers, advertisements in newspapers & magazines, on
hoardings, banners, websites and of course in the marketing suite.
We are
also regularly approached simply to provide imagery for marketing. This
simply means that angles are selected and the elements seen in those
views are modelled as with planning images. The entire development only
needs to be modelled if there is an aerial view required or the model
is also to be used for animation purposes.
Get
animated
Larger schemes, for example retail projects or high density residential/mixed-use
schemes may benefit from a walk-through animation. At a length to suit
your presentation and budget these provide the viewer with a convincing
depiction of the proposed environment. Where projects are subject to
public scrutiny and opinion these tools can be invaluable, enabling
people to really buy into a scheme. Furthermore, once produced, the
animation can be edited in accordance with any design changes and further
life-styling added for use as a marketing tool. Particularly effective
in marketing suites, we can arrange for music accompaniment, logo’s
to be added and also add stills of the development at agreed viewpoints.
